Learning The Way

The internet has completely changed the way in which we see the world and our place in it.Those tools and skills needed are no longer a matter of “Nice to Understand” but have become as fundamental to each of us as professionals as writing.

Given the range of avenues "Out and In" that connect to each of us at all times, it is highly valuable to take the time to establish an ‘Internet Plan’ that captures the range of ways in which we use the www.

This should start with a checklist of high end methods including:

BASIC CONNECTION POINTS:
* “Home” site
* Additional “Pages”  Of consequence

CORPORATE AND PERSONAL BRANDING:
* Desired Impression Converted into a plan
* Background Message
* Review Team to advise as to the value of changes

E-MAIL:
* Capture and review of a wide array of e-Addresses
* Best Methods
* Review of Provider Functions (e.g. Screening of Junk Mail)

NEWS SOURCES:
* Outreach Methods to quickly capture a range of On-line News Services

SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORK  SITES (e.g. Facebook):
* Target List
*Calendar for Review and adjustment of information about you

SUPPORT CAPABILITIES:
* Individuals with advanced skills
* Trusted Entities

VOCABULARY:
* Adjustable List of current expressions
* Means of Verifying Common Meanings

WORKING TOOLS:

Since this is a rapidly evolving reality, we are requesting your input into what the TRG Team is assembling into this growing list. Any of The Agenda Readers with recommendations, commentary or issues of common concern related to the "New" internet, please email them to us to be included in subsequent articles focused on this critical subject.

Focus on the Future
Guest Predictions:
Dawn Meyer

Guest Predictions is a regular feature in which we ask leaders in a number of professions a set of questions that affect us all.

Dawn Meyer, Executive Director, Loudoun Education Foundation
Prior to joining the Loudoun Education Foundation, Meyer had been active in Loudoun County Public Schools as both a volunteer and teacher. She taught second grade at Potowmack Elementary School from 2002 to 2005. As a volunteer, she worked in the classroom with students on reading strategies. Before working in education, Meyer was a publicist for Simon and Schuster; Farrar, Strauss & Giroux; Bantam Books; and Hyperion.

Q:     What do you see as the key emerging uses of the internet in Education?

A:    The Internet provides all students with the opportunity to feed their intellectual curiosity through online courses and academic forums. Not only does the Internet provide a chance for people from all walks of life to learn applicable skills and get a college degree, but it also encourages students to further explore subjects that interest them.

Q:    What surprising applications of the internet have you found in Education?

A:    ITunes U has some oddly specific courses – I once caught my older daughter listening to a series of lectures called “Shoes and Sustainability.” I guess the beauty of the Internet is that there is something out there for everyone!

Q:     What have been the "Best Uses" of the internet for you in Education?

A:    In addition to universalizing higher education, I just love that teachers have so many resources that are free and easily downloadable, everything from creative lesson plans to TED Talks to augment the classroom experience.

Q:     What should be avoided when dealing with the Internet in Education?

A:    There’s always the issue of Internet safety, especially when students and teachers are using the web. They should be extra careful when signing away personal information, like addresses or credit card numbers, to sites that claim to be legitimate.

Q:     Which next steps might you recommend for all of us to take in Education

A:    Be open to change, be adaptable.  Thanks to technology and the internet, the traditional school structure is changing. Electronic textbooks, online teaching, global classrooms are the future.

President's Letter

Dear Friends,

All of us at TRG are saddened by the departure of a great Mentor, Ally and Friend...  Richard Earle, who passed away at home on Saturday, May 18th after a long period of health decline.

Although this moment has been anticipated for many months, I find myself at a loss for words to fully express my sorrow... After considering many ways to honor him, I have concluded that the best is to  give a respectful tip of the hat to the lifelong legacy of professionalism he leaves behind.

To his family go my heartfelt love and deepest regrets.

Best,
Marc Paul Chinoy!
